How to make your home environmentally sustainable

How to make your home environmentally sustainable

There are plenty of ways you can make your home greener. In this blog, I am going to cut to the chase and share with you some of my favourite tips. Here goes…

Embrace your inner recycling ninja

You’ll be amazed at how many recyclable products are sent to landfill each year. This happens mostly because consumers can’t be bothered to do the right thing.

Recycling is great because it’s easy, and saves natural resources and energy used to make new items from scratch. But most importantly, it decreases waste sent to landfill.

Often, consumers may simply not realise what products are recyclable. The best place to educate yourself is your local council’s website. Not every council has the capacity to recycle the same thing, so you may need to check your own area.

Insulation is a wonderful thing. It helps keep your house warmer in winter, and cooler in summer. What’s not to love about it? It’s also very cost-effective and saves a heap on heating and cooling bills. That makes insulation not only one of the greenest, but one of the smartest ways to improve your home’s sustainability.

Get your hands dirty

When we throw out organic material and send it to the landfill, it decomposes to produce methane, a particularly nasty greenhouse gas. Organic matter actually accounts for two-thirds of all waste sent to landfills, making this the second largest source of methane in Australian landfills.

If you are then wondering what to do with those leftover veggies and fruit gone bad, composting is a simple solution that takes care of the problem before the organic material gets anywhere near a landfill. A simple composting system (which can be tailored to suit any home) allows for the decomposition of your organic material, which can then be repurposed as soil for your garden (or someone else’s garden). Compost systems are as easy as poking some drainage holes in the base of a large plastic container, and placing in a cool spot with plenty of light 🙂

So, there you have it! My little hacks will help you play a small role in the long march towards more & more Aussie homes being environmentally sustainable.
