The possibilities of home automation

The possibilities of home automation

So, what really is home automation? It’s all about handing over control of certain mundane things to a pre-programmed technological device. This can include things like lights turning on, climate control, preheating an oven, turning on the TV – the possibilities are endless for time-related commands. Automation can also take care of non-scheduled events, such as turning on all the lights in your home when your security system alarm is triggered.

Have you ever watched a science fiction film and marvelled at how the characters can turn their lights on with a simple voice command? How they remotely monitor systems through their watches? How they can move at warp speed through the galaxy? Well, with home automation, that’s all possible (well, except for that last one).

Let’s look at some of the ways new technology is helping this become possible…

Is that east-facing window letting in too much light in the morning? No worries! Program your motorized blinds to stay closed in the morning, and let light in through another window. Do you have a cleaner who comes at the same time each week? Too easy! Automation can unlock the house for them, and lock it up once they’re done.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of remote access is security. Home automation has led to a security revolution, allowing for better integration of technology, enabling 24/7 remote access to what’s going on in and around our homes. Motion sensor cameras can be installed and linked to your phone, meaning you’re instantly alerted if someone is intruding in your home. Or if someone has to drop by to pick something up, you can easily let them in while you’re still at work.

Although home automation is still in its infancy, we’re already seeing life-changing technological possibilities. Automation and technological integration is only going to continue to improve. Whether it’s better home security, wearable electronics or voice command technology, the future of home automation is bright and exciting. If you’d like to talk more about these exciting possibilities, or perhaps you have your place automated already, get in touch. I’m always up for a coffee & chat.
